Hymns to the Night

Hymns to the Night — a nod to the 18th century German author and philosopher, Novalis — is an EP I made in 1999. This generally low-fi, collection of electronica was my first attempt at a solo music project, having previously only ever performed and recorded with punk bands and jazz ensembles as a percussionist.

Originally, there were a couple of other tracks in this collection, but I've decided not to include them here so that I can present the album as a slightly more coherent piece. Aside from the very dancey "Sing with Me," the overall feeling of the album is downtempo (in a late 90's way) and is really pretty simple in concept and execution.

Dinosaur Songs

In 1999, the Discovery Channel produced and aired the Peabody Award winning program, Walking with Dinosaurs. I really enjoyed watching this on TV at the time, and I was actually even inspired to write this four song EP a couple weeks later. Each of these songs was written to reflect some specific dinosaur or segment of the program.

I wrote all of these songs as MIDI notation in Cakewalk a long time ago, and they're technically very dated. But, chiptune or other 8-bit music fans might find them somewhat appealing.

Beware the Bells

This song is an electronically re-worked take on the classic Christmas song, Carol of the Bells. I created this song with a friend that makes electronic music of his own under name Wax Absurd.

Sound Bits

If the other songs on this page can in any way be called the "A Sides," then the stuff would definitely be the "B Sides." The things you'll find here are aren't really songs in the sense of anything that I'd consider a "complete," finished work. But, realistically, I know that I'm probably never going to go back and add anything else to them — so they're as finished as they're ever going to be. The links below range from very short songs to small pieces meant just to set a mood to longer clips that were intended be only one track in a more traditional song. I'm adding these to the site for two reasons. One, I think some of it (like "The Farm Song") is just kind of fun and enjoyable if only in a goofy way. Two, someone may get inspired to use one of the shorter pieces in the way I originally planned, as just one track of a complete song or as background audio to, say, a "Game Over" screen in a video game. I hope you enjoy listening to these things that were never really intended to be heard in public at all!
